Tooth Extraction

A tooth extraction is generally a last-resort procedure to remove unsalvageable teeth. While the thought of the procedure may be daunting, the team at Heritage Dental understands and will make sure you feel comfortable and supported throughout the process.

Reasons for Tooth Extraction

We emphasize the importance of preventive dentistry to preserve teeth and maintain a healthy smile. Still, some situations make tooth extraction the best option:

  • Cracks or fractures of a tooth below the gum line
  • Severe abscess that cannot be treated with a root canal
  • Advanced decay beyond repair
  • Loose teeth due to gum disease
  • Placement of a full or partial denture
  • Alignment issues or preparation for orthodontic treatment

Why Choose Heritage Dental for Tooth Extraction

We don’t take tooth extraction lightly and will only recommend it if it’s in your best interest. If you do need the procedure, turning to Heritage Dental offers several benefits:

Frequently Asked Questions

Following proper aftercare instructions is essential for comfortable healing and preventing complications after a tooth extraction. The initial 24-48 hours are most critical for forming a good blood clot and beginning the healing process.

Post-Extraction Care Guidelines

First 24 hours:

  • Bite firmly on gauze for 30–60 minutes to control bleeding
  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using straws
  • Don't smoke or use tobacco products
  • Take prescribed medications as directed
  • Apply ice packs externally for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off

Days 2-7:

  • Gently rinse with warm salt water after 24 hours
  • Maintain soft diet (yogurt, applesauce, soup, etc.)
  • Brush carefully, avoiding the extraction site
  • Continue prescribed pain management
  • Elevate your head when lying down

It's normal to experience some swelling, discomfort, and minor bleeding during the first few days. However, contact us immediately if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, fever, or pus formation, as these may indicate complications requiring prompt attention.

Tooth Extraction Technology

Nitrous Oxide or "Laughing Gas"

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a mild sedative gas mixed with oxygen and administered through a small mask placed over the nose. This safe, effective sedation method helps anxious patients remain calm and comfortable during dental procedures without full unconsciousness.

Commonly used for everything from routine cleanings to more complex treatments, nitrous oxide takes effect quickly and wears off rapidly after treatment. Patients benefit from reduced anxiety, increased comfort, consciousness that allows communication with the dentist, and the ability to drive themselves home afterward, making dental visits accessible for those with dental phobias.
