What should I do after a tooth extraction?

Following proper aftercare instructions is essential for comfortable healing and preventing complications after a tooth extraction. The initial 24-48 hours are most critical for forming a good blood clot and beginning the healing process.

Post-Extraction Care Guidelines

First 24 hours:

  • Bite firmly on gauze for 30–60 minutes to control bleeding
  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using straws
  • Don't smoke or use tobacco products
  • Take prescribed medications as directed
  • Apply ice packs externally for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off

Days 2-7:

  • Gently rinse with warm salt water after 24 hours
  • Maintain soft diet (yogurt, applesauce, soup, etc.)
  • Brush carefully, avoiding the extraction site
  • Continue prescribed pain management
  • Elevate your head when lying down

It's normal to experience some swelling, discomfort, and minor bleeding during the first few days. However, contact us immediately if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, fever, or pus formation, as these may indicate complications requiring prompt attention.
